2002 spring turkey hunt - 20lb 9" beard

The 2005 whitetail deer season was a success for me. This time I broke the two year curse and got a buck, not a big buck, but a buck nonetheless. This year it was all surplus. I started out with my No4MkII, and then mixed the M96 Swedish mauser and the K31 on different outings. I did not see anything the day I took the K31 out.

The first deer I shot was a large doe, on a whim I took out the M96 and decided not to sit in my hunting blind. Instead I sat next to an old stump deep in a swamp that I bowhunted in. The doe came in real fast with two smaller does. Regrettably I had to take three shot, the first two missed; the third dropped here in here tracks. Moving deer in thick cover is not an easy target. I used 140gr sierra’s Gamekings.

The buck I got hunting a buddies place. The buck came slowly into me and held up in some heavy cover 75 yards from me. I put the No4 sights on him a he went down without taking another step. I used 150gr ballistic tips on him. He was only a 4 pointer but after two frustrating season and the fact that I used one of my surplus rifles made it special in my book. Below are the results.

Next up is coyotes; I’m giving it a rest until about mid January then see if I can bag one. Turkey hunting is coming in May, which some planning for that will begin soon.
